Introduction: GE Fanuc IC697CPM914 Troubleshooting Guide

This troubleshooting guide is a test of the GE Fanuc 9070 processor, an IC697CPM914, and it’s in a IC697CHS750 5 slot rack. There are no other modules in the rack, just the CPM, and it’s being powered by an IC697PWR711 power supply. So, your goal here is to just try to get your processor into Run Mode which will be your test.  Note that the door is disconnected so it’s not distracting but that it lists: LED’s as follows Module, OK, Run, Outputs Enabled, Memory Protect.

Step 1: Power Up

Now go ahead an power up. If for some reason you have a blinking OK light or your OK light is not working or unable to connect, then that means that you definitely have a problem with your processor and you won’t be able to follow this test. If that’s the case for you please go to the bottom of this page for more information, spare parts, supplies and more.

Step 2: Configure Proficy Machine Edition & Get Into Run Mode

So, now that you do have it powered up, what you are going to do is connect up to it using Proficy Machine Edition. Okay, once you are connected what you want to check is, what you want to do is hit the handprint which toggles you into Program Mode.
Now, you are in Program Mode. Go to Target on the top menu bar and once you’ve clicked Target you can go to Online Commands, Clear, and when the window comes up for clearing what you want to do is select the bottom two selections Controller and I/O Fault Table. You don’t want to select Memory, you know you might clear something that you need to save so Controller and I/O Fault, click yes.
Alright, now that that’s clear you’re going to go to the Download and Run icon which is the icon where it shows “loading information down and the run button” in one icon. Click that, so now it’s going to ask you what is it that you want to download exactly. So just the top two selections: Hardware Configuration and Logic.
You don’t want to write anything to permanent flash memory, again this is just a simple test and your goal is get the CPM into Run Mode. Alright, so you are going to select that and get a Build in Progress now. Okay, so once that’s done building it’ll allow you to get Online and go into Run Mode.

Step 3: Checking LEDs & Toggle Switch

Now that you are in Run Mode, all three LED’s are lit up so this gives you an opportunity to test the toggle switch. There are no other ports, so it’s Toggle Switch and the Memory Switch.

There are three positions, right now with all three lights on and the Toggle Switch in the upright position, and it is Run Enabled and I/O Enabled and Output Enabled. So if you go down to the middle setting, the Inputs and Outputs are Stopped, but it’s still in Run Mode and then if you go down one more to the bottom most position the processor is in Stop Mode, manually. So you know this switch works.

Step 4: Testing Memory Protect

Next thing, of course is the Memory Protect, this is important. These switches are known to fail sometimes so what you do is insert the key, turn the switch, hit the LED and it lets you know that the Memory Protect is actually working.

Step 5: Additional Steps if Necessary

Alright so if this is a processor that’s giving you a hard time and you feel something is wrong with it what you should normally do is let the processor run overnight or over a weekend, couple, two, three days and what you’re trying to do with that is you’re hoping that the processor stays in Run Mode.
So when you come back to check on it, if you don’t see all three lights on or some software suggests that it’s out of Run Mode what you want to do is go to Proficy Machine Edition, go to Target and go to Diagnostics and your Diagnostics screen with pop up and it will tell you the reason that it faulted or any errors.
It’ll list them and you can click on those and a lot of times it’s using technical terms for what the problem is and it’s hard to interpret what’s going on but sometimes it has valuable information that you can understand so you can try that.
