Introduction: GE Fanuc IC697CPU771 Troubleshooting Guide

This troubleshooting guide is a test of a GE Fanuc 90-70 IC697CPU771 processor in an empty IC697CHS750 5 slot rack and it’s being powered by the IC697PWR711 power supply.

Step 1: Powering Up

Go ahead and power up the power supply. When you power up notice that the top LED is actually the CPU OK LED, so if yours is blinking or if it’s not on at all then you definitely have a problem with your processor and you won’t be able to follow this test. If this is the case see links at bottom for more information and supplies.

Step 2: Configuring Proficy Machine Edition

Now that it’s on and it’s connected you are going to use the software, GE’s Proficy Machine Edition software. Go ahead and click the icon that allows you to connect to the device, the lightening bolt icon. And you should be connected and if you are you know that the bottom port is working, the only port is working.
You are going to put it in program mode and once it’s in program mode, you are going to go to Target on the top menu bar, Online Commands, and then that sub menu, Clear which makes the clear memory pop up.
So in this folder what you want to do is select Controller and Fault Table and I/O Fault Table so just two selections, the bottom two selections Controller Fault and I/O Fault.
You do not want to clear All Memory or anything else because you could risk losing something that you need to keep. Once that’s successful, you’ll click Download and Run and then it’s going to build this blank configuration.

Step 3: Getting the Processor into Run Mode

Remember you’re just testing the CPU on it’s own and you’re just trying to get it into Run mode right now. And when it asks you what you want to download, you just want to download Hardware Configuration and Logic, no other selections.

So again, the goal here is to get the processor into Run mode and incidentally, if you do have a memory card, you have to have an expansion memory card (see above) on this processor in order for this test to work, whichever memory card that you use it doesn’t really matter just as long as you have it configured correctly in the CPU itself in the software.

Step 4: Testing the Toggle Switch

Now, that you’ve got it into Run mode you are going to check the OK LED again, this is the RUN light enabled, and this is the I/O enabled. (see above) Using this three position toggle switch, which starts out in the top position, you’re going to test to see if you can turn these on and off.
So first one down shuts off the I/O so that’s I/O disabled. Second clip down in the lowest position is
the Run disabled and then switch it back on. If all of these LEDs work you know this works and you know that the port works so that’s basically the whole test.

Step 5: Additional Steps if Necessary

If you feel like this processor is still giving you a hard time, what you want to do is let it run overnight over a weekend or for a couple of days and you’re hoping to see that the processor stays in Run mode over that time and it doesn’t kick itself out because if it kicks itself out there’s a bigger problem.
If this happens, kicks itself out of run mode, go into again Proficy Machine Edition check under Target and then below you’ll see Diagnostics and on your info viewer screen you’ll see a Fault Table and it will
explain the reasons, if it does pop out of Run mode, why it lost Run mode.
