IC697BEM733 Test & Troubleshoot GE Fanuc PLC Programming Proficy Software

Introduction: GE Fanuc IC697BEM733 Troubleshooting Guide

This troubleshooting guide is a test of a GE Fanuc IC697BEM733 remote I/O scanner and as you can see it is in the place where you would typically have a processor. That’s because this is actually Target 2 instead of Target 1. Target 1 is what you would normally see with a chain of racks, but this is something for extended I/O.
BEM733

Step 1: The Setup

The BEM733 is in an IC697CHS750 in an empty 5 slot rack, illustrated above, being powered by an IC697PWR711 power supply. The physical setup includes: 1) a terminal that you would typically see on a BEM731, also have one on a BEM733.
The top two screws closest to the left (see green oval above) are Serial 1 and Serial 1 and have a 150 om resistor in between those for this test so that you don’t have noise. Also illustrated is a cable, an AS693232SNP programming cable and the other end of this, of course is going to the serial port on the back of the computer and then you have this Hand Held Monitor port, which is open at the moment. Finally the LED light is green so its is powered up, the LED indicating that the module OK. You’ve got to make sure that this light is on before you start the test. If the LED doesn’t come on there’s a problem with the BEM733 from the start and you won’t be able to follow the rest of this guide; if that’s the case contact us using information at the end of this guide.

Step 2: Setup of Proficy Machine Edition

Now in Proficy Machine Edition you need to is establish a Target 2. So, go ahead and open up a blank file and for test purposes you can call it BEM733 Test. Under the tab Project, you want to click Project you’ll see Add Target. Click Add Target and then another window will pop up, and you want to click GE Intelligent Platforms Remote I/O and another tab will pop open that says Series 90-70 Genius so you want to click that.
So those are the three windows that are going to pop open and you want to click that, and when you’ve done that you will have, in the Navigator bar, a Target 2 pop up. Target 2, in Main Rack and you should select the same configuration in the software that you see physically illustrated here: the power supply, BEM733 and a rack which is otherwise empty.

Step 3: Connect Up using Proficy Machine Edition

Alright, so now that you have this physically configured, the first thing you want to do is connect up to this using Proficy Machine Edition. Go ahead and do that. Hit the lightening bolt, connect up and you hit the hand print and then you click on the hand print and two triangles pointing to the left pop up, that’s as far as you can get. The reason you do that is it takes you online with this device, then I’m able to hit Target.
Next go to Target, then go to Online Commands and there’s two functions you should look at here, first is show status. You want to know that it sees this device as what it really is, so you hit Show Status and it says that it’s a BEM733. In fact, that is the version, firmware version is 3.07 that’s referring to the EPROM revision that’s on the back of the board.
So now you know that it sees it as the device is supposed to be and the next thing you’ll do is Clear Controller Fault & I/O Table Fault and you do that because if there is a problem with it, it will start there.

Step 4: Using Hand Held Monitor

Hand Held Monitor
The second thing you’re going to do is pretty simple, it’s using an IC660HHM501 Hand Held
Monitor Genius, GE Fanuc Genius. You are going to plug it into the Hand Held Monitor port (see in image from Step 1 above).
You are going to turn this on. Click OK, F2 Analyze, F3 Block Bus Status. So what you are looking for here is that there is some reference and there’s the 3.7 referring to the chips described above and that there’s no forces and no faults.
Note that if you were doing this test and were  plugged in and there was a problem, you’d go through that same test just described: ie: Hit Analyze, Block Bus Status and you wouldn’t see anything at all it would just say “Searching Bus” and it would continue to “search bus” because there’s nothing there if it’s not working.
So, if that isn’t working or you’re unable to connect to this device and see what it is to the Proficy Machine Edition there’s likely an issue with the BEM733.
