IC660BBA106 How-to Troubleshoot & Test Genius Block I/O Test GE Fanuc PLC Training

Introduction: GE Fanuc IC660BBA106 Genius Block Troubleshooting Guide

This troubleshooting guide is a test of the GE Fanuc IC660BBA106 6 Input Analog Block which measures current source. In order to test this, you will need to test all the features and functions of this device.

Step 1: The Setup

The first thing is the hand-held monitor and the port that it connects to. (see below)
handheld-monitor-and-port
You will also be checking the serial port that is connected to your bus controller, and that is a Genius Bus Controller IC693BEM331, and this is attached to an IC693CHS397 5-Slot Rack, powered by an IC693PWR330 Power Supply and controlled by an IC693CPU374 Processor.

Step 2: Using Proficy Machine Edition

You should be using Proficy Machine Edition software and the first thing you want to do when you check this block is to go into your hand-held monitor, part number is IC660HHM501. And you want to configure the block to match the information that you have in Proficy Machine Edition.

So in the handheld monitor you are going to click OK F4, F3 Configuration, F1 Program Block ID. You should have already programmed for this to be block number 1 for simplicity sake. The way to do that is to press F2, change the block number, Block number 1, then hit Enter.
Since the information is the same in Proficy Machine Edition and you have the processor in Run Mode, i have an I/O Enabled light. So if you shut the processor off, the light goes off and goes back on when it is in Run Mode. This is telling you that the Genius Block is talking to the Genius bus controller, which is configured through the software through the serial port. You also know that the monitor port is working because you able to configure it.(see below)

The next thing to do with the handheld is go back to Home, F3 for Configuration, F2 to Configure the Block. For this illustration and the purpose of testing, the Genius Block is set to all the factory standard settings that it comes with. You may have different settings and it is not recommend that you change those settings. In this illustration you are just seeing what is done in a typical test
The first thing is that you do want to Report Faults if there is any. Channel Active and you are going to select Yes for all 6 inputs. You want to test all of them. After that is the scaling, ie: F2 to show the scaling. Your scaling is factory standard, but what you have done is that you have made sure that all the settings are the same for each channel; therefore, you are going to be looking for the same response from every channel. A different reading or response could indicate that it is bad.
Another thing to notice is that the configuration protection in this illustration is disabled. But for your purposes, you might want to keep it enabled to protect what you have.
So, now you are going to go back to Home, F2 to Analyze the Block, F1 to Monitor the Channels. Input 1 and input 2. It only shows two inputs at a time. What you are using to generate the milliamp is a 4 to 20 mili-amp generator. It has these probes or leads, so you can touch them with the corresponding channels and check what the results are using the hand-held monitor.(see below)
probes
So what you will be doing is touching the leads from the generator to input 1, those are on terminals 11 and 12, and you should be getting a result of almost 20 thousand. Input number 2 is terminals 15 and 16 with the same result. Hit F1 to toggle over to inputs 3 and 4. Inputs 3 and 4 are touching terminals 18 and 19 with the same result of 20 thousand. On channel number 4, you should be touching terminals 22 and 23. you are going to hit F1 one more time to get to channels 5 and 6 touching terminals 26 and 27 which should give you the same reading that you had with the previous 4 channels. And last is terminals 30 and 31 for number 6. Again, the same result.
Now that you have seen that every channel is pretty much the exact same result, you know that this is a good working block. You know everything is communicating properly.

Step 3: Additional Steps if Necessary

So, if you power up your Genius Block and you are not getting any lights on at all or you are using the hand-held monitor and you try to store information the way illustrated here by by programming the block ID and all you get is question marks, which means it is not able to store the configuration. Or if any inputs have a false reading or inaccurate reading. These are all very common problems with Genius Blocks. If this is the case with you, please see links to help, parts and service below.
