Introduction: GE Fanuc IC697CMM742 Troubleshooting Guide

This troubleshooting guide is a test of a GE Fanuc IC697CMM742 Ethernet Interface. What you’re going to do here is you are basically going to ping this.

Step 1: The Setup

Illustrated here is an IC697CHS750 5 slot rack and the other slots are empty, an IC697CPX782 processor and a IC697PWR711 power supply. You should have this powered up and have it configured.

Step 2: Setup in Proficy Machine Edition

In Proficy Machine Edition software is you are going to select all of this physical information that you see illustrated here. So you have an IC697CMM742 in Slot #2. Go into the configuration by right clicking on Slot #2 and hitting configure and then give it an IP adress and a sub net mask. Make sure to give it an IP address that’s far above anything that you have here on your network so that it doesn’t get confused with anything else that you have here so that when you ping it, you know you are only pinging this device and you are going to test that theory.

 

So what you should have is a local Ethernet cable (see above) and you are going to plug it into where it says 10 Base T. Once you get the LAN On LED blinking and you know you’re ready to ping it you are going to go into your Command Prompt and ask it to ping and then the address that you put in, hit enter. And you are looking for a reply to that address. You should get four out of four and it tells you the time, the milliseconds, that it takes for this reply to happen and if it does then this is a working unit.

Step 3: Checking the AAUI Port Transceiver

So the other port you need to check is the AAUI port that’s this device (see below), you are going to plug the Ethernet cable into that and then into the CMM and do the same thing.

You are going to hit the UP key to make it quicker, ping and then address and enter. Again, make sure that this is blinking before you hit enter otherwise you’re not going to get a response.
The last thing you are going to do is unplug this so that there’s nothing going to the CMM and you are going to hit that same address and again you are going to ping it one more time.
The reason you do this is to make sure that you are not accidentally pinging something that someone else has programmed on the network so hit enter and you should get no response from this. It should actually read Request Timed Out four times in a row that way you know that you’ve only tested this and this is the only working unit.
 
So if you do plug this in and you don’t get an OK light or if you don’t get any responses even if you do have an OK light out of these ports then you definitely have a problem with the Ethernet interface.
