Murata’s New Dancing Robot Cheerleaders Balance Themselves On a Single Ball
Murata is unveiling the company’s new dancing robot cheerleaders at the upcoming Japanese technology trade show, CEATEC.
According to the Murata website,

And now, with the goal of using technology to produce happy smiles, Murata introduces the world’s first team of robot cheerleaders. Representing the infinite possibilities of electronics, Murata cheerleaders are ready to cheer on innovators everywhere!
The design of the robots is unique because each cheerleader features a robot body that balances on a single ball. The ball represents the platform for the robot’s locomotion and also helps provide a large range of motion.
Three gyro sensors on each robot help the cheerleaders balance, similar to the way a Segway is able to identify leans, make corrective actions, and balance on its own. The cheerleaders are also capable of holding pom-poms containing colour-changing LEDs, and can even shake the pom-poms around without falling over.
In addition to the three gyro sensors, the robots feature four infrared sensors and five ultrasonic microphones.
The robot cheerleaders use the real-time data from these sensors by way of wi-fi in order to know each others positions and stay in perfect harmony.
The robots come equipped with a battery that can hold an hour’s worth of charge and they can travel at a speed of 30cm/second within a four-square-meter area.
The cheerleaders are tiny however, standing at only 36cm tall.
