Internet Of Things (IoT) Now The Major Growth Engine For Semiconductor Manufacturers
Eighty-seven percent of consumers have never heard of the Internet of Things (IoT), but why should they? The IoT is mostly about Machine to Machine (M2M) communication and the sooner M2M takes off, the sooner consumers will know about and benefit from IoT. Besides, there are still some hurdles for consumers to get over including the widespread adoption of 5G, expected to make IoT for consumers much easier.
In the meantime, demand for semiconductor chips is set to increase due manufacturers adoption of IoT. Growth will be such that the current drivers in the semiconductor industry, mobile devices, smartphones & tablets will be displaced by IoT related manufacturing equipment.
Today, more and more manufacturing machinery contains key components based on semiconductor chips: microcontrollers, image sensors, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sensors, and more.
According to John Wei of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, “the demand will be diverse, from low-end chips to high-end chips” for power management ICs, application processors and more.
The global semiconductor equipment market is expected to expand at 21% this year to $38.4 billion and reach $43 billion in 2015. Current estimates are that by 2020 there will be 26 billion items and objects making up the Internet of Things (IoT).
The speed of adoption of IoT will also rely heavily on the number of competent developers who devote themselves to creating quality software.
