North American Robotics Sector Shatters First-Half Sales Record
The Robotics Industries Association announced that the North American robotics sector has set a new first-half sales record, selling 14,135 robots valued at $788 million this year.
The 2014 first-half sales marked 30 percent increase in units and 16 percent in revenue over the first half of 2013.
The best single quarter ever can largely be attributed to North American customers buying 8,197 robots for $450 million total.
RIA reports that the automotive industry had the single largest impact on the sales jump, almost doubling the level of orders from the second quarter in 2013, but that all manufacturing sectors also played an important role in increased sales.
RIA President Jeff Burnstein said, “In 2010, after one of the worst recessions in our nation’s history, unemployment in the U.S. was nearing 10 percent. Since then, amidst record years for robot sales, unemployment has steadily fallen toward pre-recession levels. The unemployment rate reached 6.1 percent in June of this year, the lowest it has been since September of 2008.”
It appears as though robots are actually creating more jobs versus taking them away, different than how most people typically view the effects of automation.
