Automated systems are only as good as the screens that display the information they provide. Each year significant improvements in displays including computer monitors, TVs, wearable displays and 3D projection screens occur. There are also breakthroughs in components and parts that are significant way-points on the road to better user experience and higher productivity.
Of course industrial screen displays tend to be more rugged due to conditions they face on the factory floor but trends in consumer and industrial electronics to smaller, flexible and more energy efficient devices are likely to continue. These technologies are in use in kiosks, POI, OEM machinery, transportation, theme and amusement parks, railroad terminals, airports and more.
Last month at the Society of Information Display (SID) annual awards show, manufacturers who have demonstrated significant technological advances or integrated outstanding features in their new products were awarded prizes.
The world’s first fully flexible, full fidelity display technology to be mass-produced. The screen is made of a plastic substrate and allows new Samsung smart phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Round to be curved, providing a better grip for the user. The curvature is 400mm while the average curvature of a human hand is from 300mm to 500mm.
These types of handheld displays are an innovation that makes use of the smartphones more intuitive and easier on the hands.
The curved OLED TV is a new kind of viewing experience. The large-sized OLED panels are just 4 mm thick and the TV weights just 19.2 pounds (8.7 kg). Picture quality is rich and full of natural colors with 8.3 million subpixels and an image delivery time of 0.001 millisecond response time, which is 5000 times faster than most LCDs.
Of course the consumer displays above would be unable to handle the abuse of an industrial setting where they would be exposed to chemicals, steam and an vibration and intermittent contact with heavy tools and equipment.
In a future article we’ll look more closely at the unique qualities of industrial displays and touchscreens and take a close look at their inherently risky and difficult lives. This said, we can expect the trend toward smaller and more energy efficient displays and touch screens to continue in both the consumer and industrial markets to continue.
