The Navy Is Developing Unmanned Robot Patrol Boats

The Navy is developing Autonomous Maritime Navigation, an unmanned craft that will patrol ports and waterways without human occupancy.

Technology from NASA is being adapted and the unmanned boats will serve more as guard dogs than exploration vehicles.  The boats will maneuver independently in water and will gather intelligence and serve in an observatory capacity for the Navy.

The unmanned crafts are more cost efficient than traditional boats and salaries and benefits are not required.

As the pentagon deals with unprecedented pressure to make cuts in the budget, the unmanned boats will be looked at closely.

U.S. Fleet Forces Command Captain Carl Conti says testing has been conducted over the last couple of years and that he led an “intruder” boat load of curious reporters toward unmanned crafts.

Last year, unmanned boats escorted a tugboat, representing a submarine, into a San Diego port.

Current testing is focusing on a particular area such as a harbor.  Right now, unmanned boats are unarmed but that is subject to change. It’s possible non-lethal deterrents such as flash-bang grenades could be used.

There are strategic advantages to intercepting an unrecognized craft because the unknown craft would be forced to show its intent.  Plus, personnel would be far enough away to respond without putting sailors in harm’s way.
