Tappan Zee Bridge Being Built By Robotic Welders
Robotic welders are helping a team of Gulf Coast workers build the new Tappan Zee Bridge in New York.
The robots are state-of-the art machines tasked with speeding up the process of installing over 1,000 steel pipes on the Hudson River.
David McQuaid, a welding expert who has consulted on the project, says, “If you can mechanize versus doing something manually, you’re way ahead of the game in any welding operation. You get faster production, better quality.”
The robotic workers are capable of working almost twice as fast as human while also reducing the number of defects but the the robots are unable to recognize an issue should something go wrong.
Because of this, four-person crews are responsible for monitoring the robots and their work.
The new bridge is expected to be completed before 2018.
