This Robotic Arm Catches Flying Objects Literally In ‘The Blink Of an Eye’…
École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) recently developed a robotic arm with quick enough reaction time to catch almost anything.
Generally, robots are unable to react to fast-moving objects, let alone catch them as humans can. This robotic arm actually imitates human behavior and utilizes a camera in order to determine the path of a flying object.
There essentially no lag time with the arm being able to catch objects in under five hundredths of a second.
To put it in perspective, the robotic arm reacts as fast as it takes a human to blink.
As far as practical applications, many researches believe the robotic arms is a major safety breakthrough, capable of catching falling people or debris in a crisis.
Also, there is potential for the robotic arm to be important to the protection of satellites in space by catching orbiting debris before crashing into and potentially causing damage to satellites.
