3-D Scanners Are Making Automation a Piece of Cake… Literally!

Concept Systems is one of the first confection food factories to utilize 3-D laser scanners coordinating with robotic work cells to automate their cake decorations and ramp up production numbers.

The company employs two individual Hermary SL 1880 scanners on their production line to analyze the shape of the cake and provide instructions via Ethernet connection to the robotic arms.

The robotic arms are then programmed by factory engineers to operate based on a set design patterns.

Design instructions can be coded using Visual Studio 2012 and changed at a moments notice without interference on the factory floor.

The 3-D scanners operate on separate Alienware laptops directing the movements and patterns of each automated system. When the 3-D scanner acquires the image of the cake, information is sent to the computer almost automatically and that information is then routed to the arms to perform the task.

It is estimated the automated cake factory can decorate and finalize up to 40 cakes per minute.

These resources can be used to decorate any type of cake that is up to 5 inches in height, but they are working to further this development to encompass a wider range of cakes capabilities.

Automated cake decoration joins a long line of other product types that are moving to factory automation in an attempt for factories to minimize long-term costs of hiring additional employees.
