Few people are familiar with the ghost knifefish found in the Amazon Basin in Peru. It has often been referred to as the ‘electric fish’, as it has an electric organ inside its body.
The organ, combined with receptors around the body, enable the fish to get an idea of its surroundings. This way, it can travel in the darkest parts of the Basin without being harmed or attacked. If something comes near or around the fish, there is a slight change in the voltage which it feels on its skin.
Professor Malcolm MacIver has picked up on this trait of the ghost knifefish and is looking for a way to create robots that can detect their surroundings. A prototype has been made that floats in a tank in MacIver’s lab.
Just as the ghost knifefish is able to swim in the deepest parts of the waters, MacIver hopes his robots will too. The technology, if developed further, could change the entire scope of underwater robotics.
The time may not be far off when human divers don’t have to be sent underwater in areas where there is no certainty regarding the dangers present. Instead, the knifefish-like robots could do the job.
