Automated Safety Systems For America’s Trains… It’s About Time!
Southern California’s Metrolink has become the first commuter rail system in the United States to implement an automatic safety system.
Why is this significant?
The system Metrolink has installed is called “positive train control” and it comes approximately five years after a collision killed 25 people and halted new railway regulations.
For Metrolink, it has now successfully fulfilled the requirements of the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which states all rail operators must install positive train controls no later than December 31, 2015.
Hopefully, a tragedy like the Metrolink collision with a Union Pacific freight will be prevented in the future.
Features of the Positive Train Control system:
- GPS monitors train movement
- Potential collision alerts are sent directly to conductors and dispatchers
- Warns of crews being on the track and switched in the wrong position
