“Machine Safety” Market To Reach $4 Trillion By 2018

In April 2013 Texas Fertilizer Plant explosion killed 15 and injured many more. Fires all have similar characteristics such as smoke, heat, or optical radiation given off by burning organic materials. Infrared radiation (IR) is easily detected through fog and smoke. In addittion pyroelectric, thermopiles, PbSe semiconductors and spark detectors can be used to locate hot-spots in a wide variety of situations so that damage can be contained. In the Texas incident, the simple use of automatic cutoff valves may have prevented the huge explosion. In another highly publicized incident known as the “Minato Ward Elevator Accident” in Tokyo in 2006 a 16-year-old high school student was crushed to death when the elevator he was exiting malfunctioned.

Safety and quality control for machines used in manufacturing, industrial or commercial settings is an increasingly high tech matter and critical to the bottom line as expenses and damages can skyrocket when things go wrong. In an area known as “Machine Safety” widespread use of sensors improves safety and efficiency and contributes to better design, higher precision and improved reliability.”Machine Safety” technology might also be used for position determination in which a “position-sensitive detector (PSD) is used to determine the center of a beam and function locally and analogously in interpreting the current produced by photodiodes. Or distances, such as the size of a room and the distance between objects in it, can be calculated using measurement devices and sensors. The number of applications of “Machine Safety” technology is virtually unlimited and more and more, machine and industrial processes are not being left to chance; everything is measured, tracked and safety systems integrated into their operation.

“Machine Safety” Market Expanding To Fit Crucial Needs

Industrial behemoths including Siemens AG of Germany, ABB, Ltd. Switzerland, and Banner Engineering Corp., Emerson Electric Company, Honeywell International, and Rockwell Automation, Inc. of the US are major players in the market know as “Machine Safety.” Theses companies provide presence sensing equipment, emergency stop controls, interlocks, relays, and PLCs with applications to manufacturing and industrial assembly, metal works, packaging and robotics and more. The market, currently valued at $2.75 trillion is expected to grow at a 9% CAGR reaching $4.2 billion by 2018.

The “Machine Safety” sector includes metalworking, packaging and robotics applications that contribute 60% of the annual business in the machine safety application market. These sectors should continue to dominate through 2018. Worldwide, the European market represents 52% of the overall machine safety market, followed by North America at 22% and Asia-Pacific at 20%. Developing economies in Russia, Brazil and the Middle East are the next largest contributors to the market with about 6% combined share.
