New Software Automates Individual Animal Tracking
Scientists are continuously studying the behavior and of small animals, such as the mating habits of zebrafish.
In order to obtain accurate data, the fish in this case have to be studied as individuals, requiring a large amount of tedious manual coding by researchers.
Now, a team of Spanish researchers have developed a software capable of automating the task of tracking individual animals.
The new software compares the intensity and distance between hundreds of pairs of pixels on each animal when it’s swimming or crawling in isolation in order to create a unique visual “fingerprint” of each individual animal.
The team of researchers at he Instituto Cajal in Madrid, Spain, have tested their software on not only zebrafish but also medaka fish, fruit flies, mice, and ants with an incredible 99.7 percent accuracy on average.
Many are calling the new technology a major breakthrough in science and animal research, specifically for smaller animals and ones that are very difficult to tell apart.
