Terminal Automation Systems (TAS) are “Supervisory Software Systems” that automate manual processes in small depots up to the largest terminals. These automated systems handle hardware interfaces and process controls while providing management with secure access to critical data for large petroleum, renewable energy, chemical, aviation, or LNG/LPG terminals.
TAS improve productivity, eliminate waste, reduce loss, improve safety, protect the environment, digitize paperwork, automate billing and enhance product security.
TAS are installed at bulk loading terminals and control Human Machine Interface (HMI) devices and communicate with weigh scales, PLCs, DCSs, flow computers and batch controllers with electronic presets. TAS automates, measures, records and reports all activity throughout a system.
Oil and gas are produced at a production site and then transported to refineries and processing plants. Typically, once these resources are refined, they enter a tank farm where they are stored until offloaded again to trucks, rails, pipelines, and ships.
A TAS is typically made up of three layers: Instrument and Control (I&C) which is comprised of basic controls and the field layer; Terminal Automation System (TAS) comprised of load rack automation and load rack controls; and Electronic Data Services (EDS) comprised of a business layer with order and allocation management.
TAS capabilities include load sequence control, inventory management, stock balancing, electronic data interchange, order management, customized reporting, and more. Bells and whistles for the oil & gas sector include: hydrostatic tank gauging, vendor managed inventory, interface and protocol converters, alarm management and temperature measurement, among others.
Terminal automation contributes significantly to operational success. Terminal automation is increasingly interfacing with the Internet, especially via supply chain management systems to manage product allocation in a network of terminals.
