Look Out Google… Volvo Is Testing Self-Driving Cars In Sweden
Google has been making headlines for the past few years because of its self-driving car and continuous improvements in automated vehicle technology.
However, other automakers have taken notice and Volvo recently announced a pilot project to take place in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Much like Google, Volvo is working on testing their self-drivin vehicle among non-autonomous traffic, on busy public roads.
Volvo calls their new project the “Drive Me – Self-driving cars for sustainable mobility” and sees the technology as an intricate factor to improving safety.
Most vehicle accidents are due to human error and Volvo hopes to deliver 100 self-driving cars to customers in Gothenburg by 2017.
Volvo engineer Erik Coelingh said recently, “The test cars are now able to handle lane following, speed adaption and merging traffic all by themselves. “This is an important step towards our aim that the final Drive Me cars will be able to drive the whole test route in highly autonomous mode.”
