According to a recent New York Times article, NY dairy farmers are investing in robotic milkers to infuse more efficiency into their processes. It looks like robots can do more than humans in the milking department. The cows aren’t complaining either.
The robots operate without any human intervention, milking the placid creatures as they walk through the automated milking station. They also monitor the output and quality of milk, measure the amount of food eaten by the cows, and the number of steps walked by the cows each day to understand their sexual receptiveness.
The benefits are clear to dairy farmers – managing robots is easier than managing people, with off-hours and sick leaves a non-issue. Importantly, labor costs are drastically reduced, and farmers believe that the savings will help them eventually break even with the exorbitant costs of purchasing one of these robotic milking units.
Automation is being used in new ways across various industries. While automation and digitization are transforming the American healthcare sector, emerging home automation systems for enhanced senior safety and pet monitoring for cat and dog owners are expected to become more mainstream in the coming years. That dairy farmers are fine shelling out big dollars for robotic milking units – which presently retail for a whopping $250,000 per unit – is an indication of the automation explosion to come.
