Finally, we have an update on Google’s self-driving car, which has essentially been incognito for the past year and a half.
For almost 2 years, Google has been working on perfecting the ability of their self-driving car to drive through cities, a task that requires the vehicle to be able to sense and adapt to many situations such as stop and yield signs, cyclists, intersections, and passing pedestrians.
In the video embedded at the bottom of the article, Google shows how their car is able to respond to changes in the road such as closed lanes or avoiding parked vehicles sticking out in the road.
The ability of the self-driving car to merge into open lanes after detecting potential issues or hazards is a major advancement in Google’s automated car technology.
Currently, Google’s self-driving car is being tested on the city streets of Mountain View, California, but the company plans to take on more cities in the near future.
Project director Chris Urmson says, “Thousands of situations on city streets that would have stumped us two years ago can now be navigated autonomously.”
I for one, can’t wait for the next update from Google on the progress of their self-driving car!
