Is MIT’s Voice-Controlled Robotic Wheelchair The Next Big Thing In Elderly Care?
MIT research scientist Matt Walter and Ph.D. candidate Sachi Hemachandra have created a wheelchair that responds to voice commands and utilizes a built-in map in order to navigate.
This is potentially a major advancement in elderly care because by simply using a microphone and headset, the wheelchair can listen to a command such as “take me to the dining room” and the intelligent chair takes it from there.
Rangefinders and sensors installed on the wheelchair allow it to be cautious navigating its surrounding areas, ensuring it doesn’t run into things.
Through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform, the wheelchair is able to build a vocabulary and become an incredible tool for those who have physical limitations yet still retain their ability to speak perfectly normal.
