Robot That Can Read Feelings! Designed to Assist Persons with Dementia, Autism, & More
“Charlie” is a robot thought to be among the most advanced in the world, and is designed specifically to assists adults and children who have issues such as dementia, autism, brain injury, cerebral palsy and more.
Designed by Rajiv Khosla, a professor at Australia’s La Trobe University and alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology, Charlie can tell the weather, shop online, talk, read, sing, walk around, and even read the feelings of humans!
Voice commands, touch pads, tablets and utilizing facial expressions helps the robot detect how a person is feeling and customize its response and/or actions.
Khosla set out to create emotionally engaging robots and says, “These robots are multi-lingual and can be personalized based on the language, culture and lifestyle of their human partners”.

Charlie is designed to have natural integrations and not rely on computers, helping in being positive and therapeutic to the robot’s user.
Amazingly, the robot will keep its eyes on a child or adult with dementia and if they forgot to do something as simple as wash their hands, the robot will immediately remind them.
Moving into the future, Charlie and similar robots can certainly be important to society, and essential to someone who suffers from life-altering issues, illnesses, and diseases.
