Meet “Rollin’ Justin”, a robot created at the German Aerospace Center’s Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics. Through motion sensors, user input, and precision the technical marvel can catch a ball. The robot has been successful. Research is limited when conducted with a single function robot. A counterpart machine, called “Agile Justin” has been developed that is able to pitch a ball.
The mechanical details are interesting to observe. Throwing and catching a ball seems like a simple act. Robots have to mimic the required hand-to-eye coordination needed to complete the task.
Berthold Baumi, a project researcher, has written a detailed description of the technology. Here is a brief explanation of how Justin and Justin work. HD stereo cameras are mounted on the heads of the robots. The system detects vibration from rapid catching motion. An inertial measurement unit predicts the ball’s trajectory.
In flight, predictions are constantly being improved. A path planner decides when, where, and what configuration is needed to catch the ball. The most logical extension of the project is to develop a third “Justin” that can catch and throw. Baby steps are necessary. One can imagine eventually watching fully functioning humanoid machines playing a game of baseball.
