The GE Fanuc Automation IC200ETM001 module is an expansion connector that expands a VersaMax PLC to accommodate up to 7 additional racks. Each additional rack can hold up to 8 input / output modules, inclusive of field bus communication modules. It comes with a 26-pin female connector at the front of the module. The connector is used to connect the module to an expansion receiver module. Be sure to locate a 16-pin male serial port connector at the upper left corner of the module. This is a serial programming port that is used for uploading firmware updates to the adjacent NIU.

IC200ETM001 module also comes with a high-speed expansion interface and 2 LED indicators for displaying the status of the expansion interface and the power status of the module. The power LED indicates that the module is being supplied with 5V DC from the CPU or NIU. It goes OFF to indicate that either the module is detached from the CPU or NIU or loss of power delivery from the CPU. The EXP TX LED blinks to indicate communication between the expansion transmitter and Bus receiver modules. It stays OFF if there’s no communication between the two. Expansion receiver modules come in two modules: Isolated module - ERM001 and Non-isolated module - ERM002.

The expansion module is installed on a DIN rail. On the same DIN rail, it then attaches itself to the left side of a VersaMax CPU or NIU module. It can connect up to 7 receiver modules in expansion racks. The overall expansion cable length is dependent on the type of expansion receiver module used. 15 meters for isolated module ERM001 and 750 meters for ERM002.

Modules and carriers should be installed on the same section of 35mm x 7.5 mm DIN rail. For proper grounding, the rail must have an unpainted finish. It’s recommended that the DIN is secured on a panel by screws, which should be 6 inches apart from each other. The label is first inserted inside the small access door located at the upper left corner of the module. The expansion module is thereafter attached to the DIN rail located at the left end of the expansion rack. No tools are required during mounting as the module easily snaps onto the DIN rail. The expansion rack ID (from 1 to 7) is selected using the rotary switch under the access door. The power supply module is then attached onto the expansion receiver and power is turned on and LEDs observed.

For removal, power off the rack power and uninstall the power supply from the expansion receiver module. Thereafter, slide away the expansion module on the DIN rail from other modules. Finally, use a screw driver to unscrew and lift the module off the DIN rail.

The expansion module is initially set to operate with a data rate of 250 bits/second for the maximum length of the expansion cable. Should the total length measure under 250 meters, and there are no ERM002 modules in the system, the VersaMax PLC makes it possible for the rate to be adjusted to 1 Mbit/second. In an NIU I/O Station, the data rate remains constant and cannot be adjusted from its default rate of 250Kbits.
