Product Description

The IC697CPX928 is a Programmable Logic Controller manufactured by GE Automation and Controls.
It is designed to fit into a single rack slot and comes with three built-in serial ports. A backplane mounted on the rack allows this device to communicate with several different modules. A run/stop control switch with three positions or specific software running from an attached computer is used to control the IC697CPX928. Seven on-board LED lights display operational status.

Features of this device include a 96MHz 80486DX4 microprocessor, floating point calculations, processor speeds of 0.4 microseconds for each Boolean function, 8K analog I/O, and 12K I/O of any mix. The IC697CPX928 supports several modules, including IC697 LAN interface modules and various display, coprocessor, communications, and link interface modules. IC660/61 bus controllers and IC697 discrete and analog I/O modules are also compatible with this device.

To program this device, connect it to a computer loaded with MS-DOS, Windows 95, or Windows NT. This connection is possible by way of a serial, parallel, or Ethernet interface. For Ethernet connections to the programming computer, special hardware is required. As the IC697CPX928 is programmed via software, hardware setup with DIP switches and jumpers is not required. Device configuration settings can be protected digitally via a password and physically by a keyswitch.

The IC697CPX928 provides six megabytes of user and program data memory. This memory is maintained by a lithium CMOS battery. Up to 256 kilobytes of optional flash memory (NVRAM) is also supported. Operating system firmware is stored in flash memory. Device disassembly or EPROM replacement is not required to update firmware.

In environments where temperatures reach 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 Celsius), a fan capable of 70 cubic feet per minute (CFM) is required to prevent overheating.

The product manual contains detailed guidelines for installing the IC697CPX928. Rack power should be off before installing. The operation control switch should be in the stop position. The memory protection keyswitch should be in the off position. Place the CMOS battery into one of the battery connection slots. Insert the device into the rack and resume power.

Series 9070 Bulk Memory

Description

The Bulk Memory Area (BMA) is a contiguous block of memory (up to 4MB) that can be used by logic programs and external devices. BMA is available in the CPX processors, IC697CPX772, IC697CPX782, IC697CPX928 and IC697CPX935 (release 7.80 and later). Before BMA can be used, its size must be set to a value greater than zero in the Settings tab for the CPX processor configuration.

Resolution

Use SVCREQ function 36 to read from the BMA to a local buffer area in the PLC, write from the local buffer area to the BMA, and retrieve the address of the BMA in the PLC. The only check done by the PLC is verifying that the specified local buffer does not fall outside the minimum and maximum available addresses for the application. The application must provide a valid local buffer area. Otherwise, unexpected results can occur.

Parameter Block Setup

This service request uses an input parameter block that consists of 11 words. The parameter block format determines how the local buffer is specified and is selected by the MSB in the Operation word. The format can be Segment/Offset (MSB cleared) or Address (MSB set).

Service Request Execution

If a requested operation in Service Request 36 fails, the function block will not pass power flow. If the BMA is not configured or if the parameter block contains invalid parameters, a read or write operation will fail. Only invalid input parameters will cause the Get BMA Size operation to fail, in which case the function block will not pass power flow. If a read or write operation is requested and the BMA is unconfigured (that is, has a size of 0 in the PLC), the PLC will log an informational fault.
