Product Description

IC697BEM742 is FIP Bus Controller (FBC)
and a member of the IC697 range designed by GE Fanuc. IC697BEM742 interfaces the FIP input output serial bus to IC697. A standard IC697 rack is available in two versions catalogued as IC697BEM742 and IC697BEM744, respectively. Both versions have 2M of RAM and 2M of flash memory. The data rate for IC697BEM742 is 1 Mbit/second.
Highlighted features of the IC697BEM742 include four FIP bus controllers per PLC system, two FIP bus channels responsible for redundant bus capability, an RS-485 serial port that attaches to a PC for in-system firmware upgrades, and a pushbutton that aids in resetting and enabling the bus controller to accept upgrades.

The IC697BEM742 FBC is also used to store configuration data to remote devices and to report faults. Software configuration is aided by a Windows programming software configuration function that runs on either Windows 95 or Windows NT. FIP devices on the bus automatically report errors or any other form of predefined condition to the PLC. The IC697BEM742 stores any diagnostic messages it receives.  Distress messages are then automatically read by the IC697 CPU. Faults are eventually displayed in the fault table using widows programming software and cleared from the programmer.  It is possible to install the IC697BEM742 FBC in any I/O slot in the CPU rack of the IC697 PLC System. Installation should not, however, be attempted without referring to the relevant manual and bus controller user guide.

Customer Questions and Answers

  • Question:  What is an IC697BEM742?  Answer:   The IC697BEM742 is a FIP Bus Controller (FIB) from the GE Fanuc 90-70 Series.
  • Question:  How many channels does IC697BEM742 have and how many slots does it occupy?  Answer:  This is a 2 channel bus controller and it occupies a single slot in an IC697 PLC standard or VME Integrator rack.
  • Question:  What does IC697BEM742 do?  Answer:  I/O devices on the FIP bus are scanned, asynchronously, by the bus controller. Then, I/O data is transferred to the CPU once per scan. A FIP bus is used primarily for I/O control. It is also used to store configuration data to remote devices and to report faults.
  • Question:  What can a FIP bus serve?  Answer:
    • IC697 and IC693 PLCs interfaced to the bus by FIP Bus Controllers
    • Remote Drops. IC693 I/O racks that are interfaced to the bus through Remote I/O Scanner modules. Each remote drop can include any mix of discrete and analog I/O modules.
    • Field Control Stations, Field Control I/O modules that are interfaced to the bus via a FIP Bus Interface Unit (BIU)
    • Generic Devices, such as general-purpose computers that are interfaced to the bus via a 3rd party FIP module
  • Question:  What are some of the features on IC697BEM742?  Answer:
    • Interfaces FIP or World FIP I/O serial bus to IC697 PLC
    • 2 versions available for standard IC697 racks: IC697BEM742 and IC697BEM744- both have 2M of RAM and 2M of flash memory
    • Data rate for IC697BEM742 is 1 Mbit/second, IC697BEM744 is 2.5 Mbits/second
    • 4 FIP Bus Controllers per PLC system
    • 2 FIP bus channels provide redundant bus capability
    • RS-485 serial port attaches to PC for easy in-system firmware upgrade (no PROMS to change)
    • Pushbutton for resetting Bus Controller and enabling Bus Controller to accept upgrades
    • FIP bus faults managed by PLC Alarm processor function
    • 6 status LEDs
    • Software configuration (no DIP switches or jumpers to set) using Windows programming software configuration function running on Windows 95 or Windows NT
  • Question:  What should I do if there is a problem with my IC697BEM742?  Answer:  Your IC697BEM742 may need  repair
