Product Description

Manufactured by GE Automation, the IC698CPE020 is a CPU from the PACSystems RX7i series. It is capable of real-time machine control and communicates with other rack modules via a standard VME backplane. Operation and control of the IC698CPE020 is accomplished by a connected computer or by an on-board three-position switch, which can be disabled if desired.

This device has a 700MHz Pentium III floating point microprocessor. Standard execution speeds for this processor are 0.14ms for every 1000 Boolean contacts. Ten megabytes of volatile memory (RAM) and 10 megabytes of flash memory (NVRAM) are available for use. A CMOS battery is required to support volatile memory. Flash memory is non-volatile. RAM and NVRAM can be used for user data, programming configuration, storing symbolic variables, and any information associated with the register. The operating system firmware is also stored in NVRAM. To update firmware, simply connect the IC698CPE020 to a computer using the proper serial port and run the update software.

Follow the procedures outlined in the manual while installing. Record the device’s MAC address. Power off the rack. In rack slot one, insert the IC698CPE020. Connect the device to the Ethernet LAN. Restore rack power. Connect the CMOS battery.

The IC698CPE020 has three serial ports and two Ethernet ports. For Ethernet connections, a category 5 shielded or unshielded RJ-45 twisted pair cable is needed, as well as TCP/IP configuration. Supported serial ports include RS-232 and RS-485. The third serial port is a station manager port.

Select features of this device include support for 512 program blocks, ladder diagram and C programming, symbolic variable support, modification testing modes, and the ability to monitor system data over a network. Note: Up to 16 web and FTP server connections are possible when using web monitoring.

Customer Questions and Answers

  • Question:  What is an IC698CPE020?  Answer:  The IC698CPE020 is a 700 MHz Central Processing Unit from the GE Fanuc RX7i Series with an Intel Pentium III microprocessor.
  • Question:  What does IC698CPE020 do?  Answer:  This CPU can be used to perform real time control of machines, processes, and material handling systems.
  • Question:  How does IC698CPE020 communicate with the programmer?  Answer:  The CPU communicates via the internal Ethernet port or a serial port.
  • Question:  How does IC698CPE020 communicate with I/O and Intelligent Option modules?  Answer:  The CPU communicates over a rack-mounted backplane using the VME64 Standard format.
  • Question:  What happens when I power up IC698CPE020?  Answer:  It will do an overall self-diagnostic check.  As the CPU powers up, the LEDs turn on and off in a specific sequence.  Refer to the Installation Manual.
  • Question:  What should the end result be of the self-diagnostic check?  Answer:  During initialization, the EOK LED light blinks and then turns on when the initialization is complete.
  • Question: How can I avoid RAM memory loss?  Answer:  Routine maintenance procedures should include scheduled replacement of the CPU's IC698ACC701 lithium battery pack.  The battery maintains program and data memory and operates the calendar clock when the power is removed.
  • Question:  If I don't have any light on or the CPU is not functioning correctly - What does that mean?  Answer:  It means there is something wrong with your processor and it will need repair or maybe even replacement.
