Rx3i Power Supply affected when portable/mobile radio is activated

Description

Applications where the RX3i PLC is exposed to RF energy, such as portable/mobile radios, may cause the power supply to shutdown when the radio is keyed. Specifically, we have observed radios operating in the 800 to 900 MHz range can cause this condition. Other frequencies may cause this condition as well where the field strength exceeds our specification.

Resolution

Testing Conducted and Observations:

The field strength of the suspect radio was measured to be 59 V/m at 4cm from the antenna of the radio, 25 V/m at 1m from the antenna, and 11 V/m at 2m from the antenna. We design our systems to an IEC standard test rating specification of 10 V/m at the equipment under test. During the test with the radio, the RX3i power supply was unaffected by field strengths of 25 V/m or less, which is at least 2 1/2 times our design specification. At higher field strengths, the power factor correction circuit is affected, causing the power supply shutdown. For reference, the S90-30 AC power supply does not have this circuit, therefore they are not similarly affected. The tests were performed in a field strength chamber to insure consistent results.

Recommendations:

We suggest placing the Rx3i system in a metal enclosure if using the AC power supply under these conditions. The RX3i DC supply, which uses a different design, was tested and works well under the same conditions.

Customer Questions and Answers

  • Question:  What is an IC694PWR321?  Answer:  The IC694PWR321 is a 120/240 VAC or 125 VDC, 30 Watt Power Supply from the GE Fanuc RX3i Series.
  • Question:   From what input voltage source range does IC694PWR321 operate?  Answer:  IC694PWR321 operates from an input voltage source in the range of 85 VAC to 264 VAC or 100 VDC to 300 VDC.
  • Question:  What are the outputs that IC694PWR321 provides?  Answer:
    • +5 VDC output
    • Relay +24 VDC output that can be used to power circuits on Output Relay modules
    • Isolated +24 VDC. This power is used internally by some modules. It can also be used to power field devices connected to 24 VDC input modules.
  • Question:  Can IC694PWR321 be installed in an Expansion Backplane in an RX3i system?  Answer:  Yes, but the battery backup and serial port functions are not available in Expansion Backplanes.
  • Question:  What does the PWR LED indicate?  Answer:  The green PWR LED shows the operating state of the Power Supply. PWR is ON when the Power Supply has a correct source of power and is operating properly. It is OFF when a Power Supply fault occurs or power is not applied.
  • Question:  What does the OK LED indicate?  Answer:  The green OK LED is steady ON if the PLC is operating properly. It is OFF if a problem is detected by the PLC.
  • Question:  What does the RUN LED indicate?  Answer:  The green RUN LED is ON when the PLC is in Run mode.
  • Question:  What is the input power (maximum with full load)?  Answer:
    • 90 VA with VAC input
    • 50 W with VDC input
  • Question:  What is the output power?  Answer:
    • 5 VDC: 15 Watts maximum
    • 24 VDC: 15 Watts maximum
    • 24 VDC Relay: 15 Watts maximum
    • 24 VDC Isolated: 20 Watts maximum
      • Note: 30 Watts maximum total (all 3 outputs)
  • Question:  What is the protective limit for overcurrent?  Answer:
    • 5 VDC output: 4 Amperes maximum
      • The 5 VDC output is electronically limited to 3.5 Amps. If an overload (including short circuits) occurs, it is sensed internally and the Power Supply shuts down. The Power Supply will continually try to restart until the overload condition is removed. An internal fuse in the input line is provided as backup. The Power Supply usually shuts down before the fuse blows. The fuse also protects against internal supply faults.
  • Question:  What should I do if my IC694PWR321 is not operating properly?  Answer:  Your IC694PWR321 may need repair
