The GE Fanuc IC655APU500 coprocessor module is an ASCII/BASIC coprocessor module from the GE Series 5 product line. It weighs 4 pounds. In addition to being relatively lightweight, the IC655APU500 coprocessor module is designed to be a compact coprocessor that only needs 1 slot for installation in a CPU rack or an expansion rack in a PLC system. The IC655APU500 coprocessor module can communicate with the CPU without using I/O references. Instead, it communicates with the CPU through the background communication feature that the GE Series 5 PLC made for intelligent modules comes with. It operates within an ambient temperature range of 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This coprocessor cannot operate in an environment with corrosive gasses.

 

The purpose of the GE Fanuc IC655APU500 coprocessor module is to operate as an interface for external serial devices. These serial devices include bar code readers, printers, scales, and CRTs. The IC655APU500 module uses its built-in BASIC programming language feature to exchange information with a PLC. The kind of information that the IC655APU500 coprocessor module exchanges with the PLC through the BASIC programming language includes all the register data, the status of an internal reference point, and the status of any of the input and output points in the system. Additionally, the IC655APU500 coprocessor module can read and write any of the input and output points in the system if it is programmed to do so. It comes with 32K of RAM that is battery-backed and an additional 24K of EPROM/RAM in a cartridge that is also battery-backed.
