The Allen-Bradley SLC 505 (5/05) Modular Processors are a family of processors that support the 1747-UIC, 1747-CP3, and 10/100 Base-T Ethernet network interfaces.  SLC 505 processors have a lithium battery which provides backup power for the RAM with an expected life of two years. The BATT LED status indicator alerts you when the battery voltage is lower than expected, at which time it will need to be replaced.  SLC 505 processors have a limit of 3 chassis with 30 slots.  Before performing servicing or maintenance, you may want to back up the processor memory. Flash EPROM can be used to backup processor memory for the SLC 505 processors. Channels 0 on SLC 505 processors are configured to have no parity and no handshaking. They are able to detect duplicates, perform CRC error check and typically they have a 19.2 kbps baud rate.

To install the SLC 505 processor, first ensure that system power is off, then fit the processor into the 0 slot of the chassis. Establishing communication with the processor involves powering it on, then connecting a 1747-CP3 cable to channel 0 of the processor and then to the serial port of a personal computer. Alternately, you may choose to connect the 1747-UIC interface to channel 0 of the processor and to the USB port on a personal computer. Another option is to use a 10/100 Base-T compatible cable to connect the personal computer Ethernet card and channel 1 of the processor to an Ethernet hub.
