The Allen-Bradley SLC 501 processor falls under the Small Logic Controllers(SLC) 500 family.  In the SLC 500 category, processors offer a wide range of functionality. A benefit of the SLC 500 family is the capability to choose from modular or the fixed controller hardware options. The modular hardware option offers flexibility through its wide range of power supply, processor, and I/O choices. The fixed controller hardware option leverages the flexibility offered by its modular counterpart by housing the I/O, power supply and the processor under one roof. As a bonus, it has a 2-slot chassis for expansion capabilities.  An external power supply is required to power the SLC-501. This power supply must be fixed on the 1746-I/O chassis on the left side. Users have the option to choose from either the 3 AC power supply or the 4 DC power supply.

The SLC 501 processor can handle modular controllers with a maximum of 960 I/O and instruction memory capacity between 1-4K. The SLC 501 uses a DH-485 port for programming.  The processor to processor communication is done by the node on the other end. It cannot initiate communication itself. The SLC 501 has a battery-backed EEPROM RAM with a backup memory. The SLC 501 handles 52 programming instructions with a scan time of 8ms/K and a Bit Execution (XIC) of 4µs. The SLC-501 can also handle a maximum of 3940 discrete I/O.

AB SLC 5/01 Processors include L511 or L514, SLC-500 Programmable Controllers
