The Allen-Bradley 1747-PIC falls under the SLC 500 family. This family has programmable memories. The 1747-PIC is not a programmable memory module itself, but it is an interface converter. The 1747-PIC interface converter converts RS-232 interface to RS-485 interface. The DH-485 is like RS-485 except for that it can accommodate more network/electrical signals. The DH-485 is an Allen-Bradley born protocol. The 1747-PIC converts the interface when communicating with SLC 5/01, SLC, 5/02, and SLC 5/03 processors. The 1747-PIC has an 11-inch long ribbon cable for connecting to the computer, plus a 1746-C10 cable for connecting to the SLC controller.
The 1747-PIC draws a maximum current of 0A at 5V and 5A at 24V. Additionally the interface converter has a maximum wattage of 2 Watts. The 1747-PIC is compatible with COM1 and COM2 serial ports. Make sure to turn off the power management functions as this inhibit the PIC driver from functioning the best. The 1747-PIC converts the RS-232 signals from the computer to RS-485 and communicates through the 1746-C10 cable to the SLC controller. When interfacing the 1747-PIC through the DH-485 port on the computer to follow the DH-485 protocol, set the DH-485 to be the program port. The has to be adjusted when using the DH-485 for communication protocol. This change is done via the configuration and terminal selection menus. DF1 can be used to start communication with external devices that use either a radio link, a dial-up modem or a leased phone line.
