The Allen-Bradley PLC-5-86 is a processor module for PLC-5 systems which belongs to the Protected Processors class. The module offers enhanced security features to limit access to important areas of the program to prevent unauthorized modification of programs. The PLC-5-86 is installed in the left-most slot of a 1771 chassis. It is equipped with 100K words of user memory, it supports a maximum of 3072 I/Os in any mix or 3072 in and 3072 out, it provides 4 DH+/Remote I/O ports (scanner or adapter mode) and 1 serial port which supports RS-232/RS-423/RS-422A. The module supports 93 I/O chassis (92 remote) and 24 I/O racks. A keyswitch is provided on the front panel of the PLC-5-86 for selecting among controller modes including Run, Remote, and Program. The front panel also includes LED indicators for the battery status, processor run/fault indication, I/O force indicator, and for the communication channels.
A 25-pin interface is provided for the serial port. Furthermore, interfaces for four communication channels are available on the front panel including channel 2A (parallel 8-pin mini-DIN DH+ and 3-pin interfaces), channel 2B (3-pin interface), channel 1A (parallel 8-pin mini-DIN DH+ and 3-pin DH+ interfaces), and channel 1B (3-pin interface for remote I/O). The PLC-5-86 consumes 3.3 Amps (at 5 Volts DC) and it dissipates up to 17.3 Watts as heat. The storage and operating temperature ranges are -40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit and 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. The module requires 5 to 95% relative humidity for optimal operation. The operating and non-operating shock ratings are 30G and 50G, respectively. The vibration rating is 2G at 10 to 500 Hertz. The approximate weight of the module is 1.242 kilograms.
