The PLC-5-46 is a standard programmable logic controller with protected memory from Allen-Bradley. The controller can accommodate 2048 I/O at maximum and 48K word of user memory. The PLC-5-46 has 4 DH+ ports for communication but it also has capabilities for accommodating a remote I/O as either an adapter or a scanner. The controller also provides a single serial port which can be used to interface with the RS-232, RS-422A, or an RS-423 network. The PLC-5-46 controller supports a 60 remote I/O chassis. The controller has a keyswitch which is used to set the processor mode, either for programming or running, and the 8-pin mini DIN for the DH+ programming terminal.
Additionally, on the face of the PLC-5-46 controller, there is a D-shell serial port which is used only for full duplex protocols, half duplex master protocols, and half duplex slave protocols. To help in troubleshooting and monitoring, the PLC-5-46 has LED status indicators to cater to things like a low battery, processor faults, force indicators, channels’ (0, 2B, 2A, 1A, 1B) communication status. The PLC-5-46 also features a slot to install the battery which is supplied with the controller and a slot to install the memory module. The PLC-5-46 should be guarded against electrostatic charges which are capable of damaging the Integrated Circuit (IC) and or semiconductors inside the PLC-5-46 processor. To achieve this, a grounding strip or point should be utilized when handling the module. The PLC-5-46 should be stored in a static-shielded bag when not being used. The PLC-5-46 is meant to be installed in an Input/Output chassis where it occupies the leftmost slot.
