The PLC-5-40L is a standard programmable logic controller from Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley. The controller features two Data Highway plus (DH+) communications options. For the PLC-5-40L to accommodate a wide range of devices using diverse communication channels, it can also accommodates remote Input/Output communications through a dedicated port. The programmable logic controller can configured to interface with RS-422A, RS-423, and RS-232 networks through a single serial port which is provided by the PLC-5-40L logic controller. For the controller, data transfer between the host computer, operator interface, Input/Output processors and the modules is done in real-time when using a remote Input/Output connection.
The PLC-5-40L uses interruptions to examine data sent to or from the controller. Also, the PLC-5-40L uses a data table to store information with each data table capable of accommodating a maximum of 32,000 words. The total user memory for the PLC-5-40L processor can hold a maximum of 48,000 words. The programmable logic controller exerts a current load of 3.3 Amps on the backplane at a voltage of 5 Volts. The PLC-5-40L features a volatile static RAM which must be supported by a battery. For Input/Output referencing, the PLC-5-40L has sixteen racks with an individual rack having a scan interval of 0.5 milliseconds for local Input/Output (extended), 10, 7, and 3 milliseconds at a speed of 57.6, 115.2, and 230.4 kilobytes per second respectively. The PLC-5-40L dissipates 17.3 watts at maximum. To protect the PLC-5-40L processor against system malfunctioning faults, the controller can be set to respond to faults.
