The 1784-KT2 is a communication interface module manufactured by Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation. The module is an IBM PS/2 MicroChannel card which enables communication between the IBM computer and Allen-Bradley programmable controllers (namely from the PLC-2 and PLC-3, as well as the Highway Plus series). The module, which weighs 0.3 pounds (0.1 kilograms), has a conformal coating which protects the control board components. Being a microchannel card, the 1784-KT2 is simply installed by being inserted into an 8-bit or 16-bit expansion slot on the IBM PS/2. The module allows the users to select its use – in other words, it can be used with other installed option boards. Once the module is installed, its operation is verified by means of diagnostics which are run on system start-up.
The 1784-KT2 operates using 5 Volts DC at 0.25 Amps with a power consumption of 1 Watt, and +/-12 Volts at 0.04 Amps with a power consumption of 0.48 Watts. The interface module uses a 62-pin D-shell output connector when connected to the Data Highway Plus network. In this case, the synchronous default baud rate of the module is 57.6K , and the maximum length of the cable amounts to 10,000 feet (3050 meters). Otherwise, PLC-2 and PLC-3 serial interface is used for connection, in which case the maximum cable length is 10 cable-feet (3 meters) and the asynchronous baud rate is between 9600 and 19.5K. The module is designed to operate in a place with ambient temperatures between 0 and 45 degrees Celsius (32 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit). Furthermore, it can withstand a relative non-condensing humidity ranging from 5 to 95%. The module meets FCC Class A Standard Requirements, which means it is designed for non-residential/non-domestic environments because it may cause interference in domestic environments. Hence, if a user decides to use the module in a residential/domestic environment, adequate corrective measures need to be taken to minimize the interference.
