The 1784-KL is an industrial hardware interface from the KTX series of products manufactured by Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation. More specifically, the 1784-KL is a PLC Interface Module which is used to connect the Allen-Bradley T-45 Portable Industrial Programming Terminal with a Data Highway Plus Network. This interface comes in a set which consists of two cards that are connected to droplines (which branch off the trunk lines) on the cable system. The 1784-KL is very lightweight and weighs only 1 pound (0.45 kilograms), and its purpose is to receive and send data over the Data Highway Plus network. This means that there are no obstacles to communication between a computer and PLC-2s, PLC-3s, and PLC-5s – in other words, communication between the two is direct. The module can only be used in the T-45 Terminal; there are no other connectivity options.
The 1784-KL Interface Module requires .5 Amps at 5 Volts DC power input, or .1 Amps at 12 Volts DC input. Additionally, the module has a maximum baud rate of 57.6 Kilobytes per second (kbps) for Data Highway Plus. The Data Highway Plus network can be used either by itself in applications with less than 20 nodes, or with other networks. In order to connect the 1784-KL directly to the PLC, a specific Allen-Bradley cable should be purchased (one of the following: the 1784-CP2 for the PLC-2, the 1784-CP3 for the PLC-3, or the 1784-CP for the PLC-5. There are three possible interface ports a user can choose from: the PLC-2 or PLC-3 serial interface or the Data Highway Plus dropline. Like many other Allen-Bradley products, this durable module can also operate properly without malfunctioning in an area with an operating ambient temperature rating between 32 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit (0 and 55 degrees Celsius). The 1784-KL can withstand non-condensing humidity levels between 5 and 95%.
