The Allen-Bradley 1771-SPI is the SPI protocol module for PLC-5 programmable controllers. SPI is a protocol developed by the Society of Plastics Industry which enables the communication of commands and status information between a master device (the SPI module) and other slave devices on the network. The 1771-SPI acts as a coordinator for the flow of information between the PLC-5 processor and slave devices. The 1771-SPI module is compatible with all 1771 I/O chassis and can be installed in any slot. A series C 1771-SPI module can only be interchanged with a series B 1771-SPI when blenders are not utilized in the system. However it cannot be interchanged with a series A 1771-SPI module.
The 1771-SPI supports a maximum of 32 devices on an SPI link. The electrical interface is the RS-485 with multi-drop capability. The data rate supported by the SPI module is from 1200 to 19200 bits per second. The module draws 1.3 Amps from the chassis backplane at 5 Volts DC. A number of precautions should be followed to avoid module damage and operator injury. These include disabling main system power to the 1771 I/O chassis wiring arm and backplane prior to installing/removing the SPI module. Furthermore, the backplane connector and the connector pins on the module should not be touched and static discharge standards should be followed. The working temperature range for the 1771-SPI is 0 to 60 degrees Celsius whereas the the storage temperature range is -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. The working relative humidity range is from 5 to 95% and the storage relative humidity range is from 5 to 85%.
