The 1771-M3 is a servo controller module from Allen Bradley/Rockwell Automation. It is an integral part of the servo positioning assembly which also consists of the 1771-ES servo expander module. The 1771-M3 occupies one slot in the 1771 input-output chassis and it is powered though the backplane. The 1771 input-output chassis accommodates a single 1771-M3 servo controller module and 3 servo expander modules (1771-ES). The 1771-M3 module uses the backplane of the input-output chassis to communicate with the servo expander module. The module uses a block transfer write function to interface communication between the PC and user commands (programmed) recorded in the data table and the 1771-M3 module. After the module receives the data/commands, it sends axis motion parameters to the servo expander module (1771-ES).
Although the 1771-M3 servo controller module and a servo expander module (1771-ES) must be used together in a servo positioning assembly, they must be of the same series for them to interface harmoniously. A Series A 1771-M3 module cannot be interfaced with a series B 1771-ES and vice versa. The 1771-M3 module has 3 LED indicators (processor communication fault, expander communication fault, and the active indicator). The indicators show things like communications breakdown between the 1771-M3 module and the PC processor/servo expander module. The indicators also indicate other faults e.g. hardware and configuration. When connecting the 1771-M3, the cable length should not exceed 50 feet. The 1771-M3 servo controller module draws a current of 1.75 Amps from the backplane and is keyed using pins 2-4 and pins 8-10. Also, the module should be operated within areas certified to meet its environmental requirements.
