The 1771-KX1 is a PROVOX communication module from Rockwell Automation/ Allen-Bradley. The module links the Allen-Bradley data highway to Fisher Controls’ Provox instrumentation system. The 1771-KX1 is capable of communicating with a maximum of eight PC stations along the data highway. This communication gives the instrumentation process access to specific memory locations in the PC stations. This in turn enables the Fisher control to access the PC stations’ data tables and to read data (64 words), perform a write operation in the data tables, and change a single bit in the data tables. The 1771-KX1 uses the block read, protected bit write, and protected write commands. When transmitting on the data highway, the 1771-KX1 module acknowledges received messages, checks errors after receiving messages, retries messages that were not acknowledged, and disconnects failed stations automatically without affecting other nodes on the data highway.

The 1771-KX1 does not recognize communications coming directly from PC stations as communication in the data highway emanates from Programmable Controller Interface Units through the 1771-KX1 communication interface module. The 1771-KX1 module uses an RS-232-C compatible channel to initiate communication with the PCIU. The RS-232-C channel provides: asynchronous data transmission (serial), full duplex communication protocol, optoelectronic, and coupled isolated differential transmission. The module has a communication rate of (110-19,200 bits per second) which is switch-selectable and a selectable parity.

For communication with PC stations along the data highway, the module uses the data highway’s cable (twinaxial). The 1771-KX1 module is standalone and is powered by an external power supply, preferably the 1771-P2 from Allen Bradley. Additionally, the module has a data highway communication speed of 57,600bps. Additionally, the module uses a voltage difference to indicate a high/ low (3 to 5 Volts DC, High, -0.2 - 0.6 Volts DC, Low). The cable lengths between the 1771-KX1 and the PCIU/ data highway should not exceed 50 feet and 100 feet, respectively. Also, the trunkline (data highway) should run to a maximum of 10,000 feet. The recommended cable when connecting to the PCIU is the 1770-CX1 RS-232-C adapter cable with the Belden 9463 cable being used for the trunkline using the 1770-XG dropline connector or the 1770-SC station connector.
