The Allen-Bradley 1771-KF communication controller module links the intelligent RS-232-C devices and the Data Highway network. When providing the link between the two, a half-duplex or full-duplex protocol can be used. At 5V DC, the 1771-KF draws a current of 1.2 amperes. The module is standalone and is powered by the 1771-P2 power supply. The 1771-KF module supports both the peer-to-peer and multi-drop link-to-link and has RS-232-C and data highway ports which facilitate connection of the various RS-232-C devices. The multi drop link is the preferred configuration when linking a set of data highways by using a set of modules. The 1771-KF communicates at a speed of 57.6Kbps.
When communicating through the RS-232-C port, communication speeds range from 110bps to 19.2Kbps. The range in communications speeds is selectable using switches SW1 through SW5, although the SW5 switch is only associated with diagnostic commands sent to the 1771-KF module from a remote data highway node. The 1771-KF module only accepts the 1770-CD data highway cable, the 1770-CP modem interface cable, or the 1770-CG data interface cable. For troubleshooting and monitoring purposes, the module has LED indicators on its face panel.
When installing the 1771-KF module, a distance of 100 cable feet should be left between the data highway trunk-line and the module. Additionally, when the module is interfacing directly with an RS-232-C device, a distance of 50 cable feet should be left between the two. But when using a modem link to interface the 1771-KF module and an RS-232-C device, the distance between them should be set by the distance of the modem link. The module should be operated within environments that are certified by NEMA type 12 standards. The 1771-KF uses the 1770-CF power cable for connections with the power supply and the cable connects to a terminal strip at the lower part of the 1771-KF module.
