The Allen-Bradley 1771-KE communication controller module interfaces with a Data Highway network (Allen-Bradley) and RS-232-C devices by using either full or half-duplex protocols. The 1771-KE draws a current of 1.2 A at 5V DC and it has a communication rate (Data Highway port) of 57.6K bits/sec. when the module communicates through the RS-232-C port. The module has selectable communication rates ranging from 110 – 19.2K bits/ sec. The 1771-KE module occupies one slot in the 1771 Input/Output chassis. For cabling, the module uses the 1770-CD Data Highway dropline cable, the 1770-CG data terminal interface cable (RS-232-C) or the 1770-CP modem interface cable (RS-232-C).
The 1771-KE communication controller module is powered from the 1771 Input/Output chassis. The 1771-KE can interface a Data Highway and an RS-232-C(intelligent) device by using either a multi-drop or a point to point link. The RS-232-C link provides either peer-to-peer communication through un-polled full duplex protocol or a polled master-slave communication. On the other hand, the data highway link provides a polled half-duplex peer-to-peer communication.
The six-switch assemblies provide a way to choose between the RS232-C link (SW1), station number (SW2, SW3, and SW4), the data highway communication rate (SW5), and the RS-232-C link communication rate and parity communication options. The 1771-KE module has 5 LED indicators on its front panel which aid monitoring and diagnosing. The indicators; the XMTG, RCVG, RDY, ACTV, and CPU indicate statuses like transmitting, receiving, ready to install, active, and CPU activity (NAK indicator) respectively. The 1771-KE module is meant to be used within industrial conditions that have been certified.
