The 1771-ASB is a universal remote I/O adapter module that is compatible with the PLC-5 system. The 1771-ASB module uses an I/O link to interface the processor’s scanner port with Input-Output modules in the 1771 Input-output chassis. For communication, the 1771-ASB uses an Ethernet, DH+, or a ControlNet network at a communication rate of 230, 155 or 57.6 Kbps. The 1771-ASB must be connected to a remote Input Output adapter port for successful communication over the network. This module is installed closer to the sensors and actuators, and its remote nature helps minimize maintenance and installation costs. In addition, it reduces the amount of cabling required. The Allen Bradley 1771-ASB reads and or writes data in parallel, but also gives room for serial communication. The module supports either 2-slot, 1-slot or ½ -slot I/O addressing. This remote I/O module occupies the left-most slot in the 1771 I/O chassis and supports the 32, 16, 12, 8, or the 4-slot Input Output chassis. All the modules in the 1771 I/O chassis where the 1771-ASB is installed should be controlled by a processor from the PLC-5 family. The 1771-ASB draws a current of 1 A at 5 Volts DC from the backplane and has a maximum power rating of 5.2 Watts.
To help in monitoring and troubleshooting, the 1771-ASB has 3 LED indicators (I/O rack fault, adapter fault and active). It also has a field wiring arm and 2 switch assemblies. The module supports transmission lengths of up to 2500 feet and provides a backplane scan rate of 230.4 k Baud. The Belden 9463, 1770-CD cable and its equivalents can be used when wiring the module.
