The Allen-Bradley 1756-MVI is multi-vendor interface module for ControlLogix systems. The module provides serial ports to the ControlLogix system for applications requiring modems and SCADA. The 1756-MVI package contains the following components: one 1756-MVI module, three serial adapter cables, and one installation manual. The 1756-MVI module can be installed in any slot in the ControlLogix chassis. Multiple modules can also be installed in a chassis. The 1756-MVI is shipped with setup jumper in the “setup” position which means that the module boots with Port 1 being enabled with the following configuration: a baud rate of 19200, no parity bit, 8 data bits, and 1 stop bit. Communication on Port 2 or Port 3 can be enabled by placing a jumper in the RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 position for the respective ports.
Three matching serial cables are part of the 1756-MVI package. Each of these cables has a RJ-45 jack at one end and a DB-9 male connector at the other end. The RJ-45 jack on each cable should be inserted into the respective receptacles on the module marked PRT1, PRT2, and PRT3. The module can be configured from a terminal connected to the console port (PRT1). The 1756-MVI is sensitive to ESD. Static precautions, including touching a grounded item for discharging static, wearing a grounded wrist strap, working in a static-free area, and avoiding touching module components, should be followed. Additionally, to prevent electrical arcing, the module should only be installed or removed with the chassis power in an off-state. The 1756-MVI consumes 0.8 Amps at 5.1 Volts DC and 3 mA at 24 Volts DC. The power dissipation is 4 Watts. The module operating temperature is from 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and the storage temperature is from -40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. The acceptable range for relative humidity is from 5 to 95%.
