The 1756-HSC comes from the class of special input/output modules in the 1756 ControlLogix Systems series. It is manufactured by Allen-Bradley and it provides high-speed counting capabilities to the controllers for industrial applications. This high-speed counting module works on two different voltage levels depending upon the output counter voltage levels required for the connected devices. For a given 5 Volts DC input, it provides counting signals in the range of 4.5 to 5.5 Volts DC whereas for 12 or 24 volts DC input signals, it can provide 10 to 26.4 Volts DC counting signals. The 1756-HSC can acquire its input pulse signal from a variety of devices. Generally, the pulse is fed through counters, pulse generators, and limit switches. The output of the counter can either be a count or it could it activate any on-board devices for a given period of time.
This counter module has two counters. Each counter has 3 input terminals and 2 output terminals. It is a 36-pin device which allows for integration with other ControlLogix modules such as Removable Terminal Blocks. The 1756-HSC is compatible with the 1756-TBCH and 1756-TBS6H modules. The counter can work in multiple modes i.e. the Rate Measurement Mode, Encoder Mode, and the Counter Mode. The A input works at an input frequency of 1 MegaHertz for the counter mode and 500 KiloHertz for the Rate Measurement. For the Encoder Mode, it requires 250 KiloHertz. The 1756-HSC draws 4 to 15 mA for these operations. It has low response time of just 50 microseconds and a delay time of just 300 microseconds. The module has an Open Type enclosure with Basic Insulation. It can withstand up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It must be installed in a ControlLogix chassis with electrostatic discharging options.
