The Allen-Bradley 1756-ESMCAP is an energy storage module for ControlLogix and GuardLogix systems. It is a capacitor-based energy storage module which is included with the controller. The ControlLogix L7 and GuardLogix L7 controllers do not include a battery. Instead they ship with a 1756-ESMCAP module. The 1756-ESMCAP module can also be used with 1756-L7xXT controllers. To prevent any potential damage during module installation, the 1756-ESMCAP should be aligned in the track and slid forward gently until it snaps into place. The 1756-ESMCAP starts to charge when the controller (with ESM) is installed in an energized chassis, a chassis containing a controller is powered on, or when an ESM module is inserted into an energized controller. The ESM charges for a maximum of two minutes after the application of power and the charging is indicated by the ESM Charging or CHRG messages on status display.
The 1756-ESMCAP should be allowed to charge fully before the controller power is removed (full charge is indicated when ESM charging or CHRG messages are not indicated on the status display). Failure to allow the ESM to fully charge prior to controller power removal could lead to loss of the application program. The 1756-ESMCAP should not be removed immediately if the 1756-L7 or 1756-L7xXT controllers lose power due to either chassis power disconnection or removal of controller from the chassis. The ESM should be removed only once the controller OK status indicator transitions from green to solid red and then to OFF. The hold-up time for the 1756-ESMCAP (which provides for maintenance of controller’s WallClockTime when power is disconnected) is 12 days at 20 degrees Celsius, 10 days at 40 degrees Celsius, and 7 days at 60 degrees Celsius.
