Allen-Bradley ControlLogix controllers can be used to build high-performance control systems. Different types of controllers with different features and specifications are available in the ControlLogix series. Standard ControlLogix controllers can be used in a variety of standard industrial control applications. Some standard ControlLogix controllers have built-in serial communication ports, and others have built-in USB communication ports. Additionally, some standard ControlLogix controllers can support up to 500 connections. Some controllers in the ControlLogix series can be used in redundant systems. ControlLogix controllers that are designed for applications in extreme environments have several of the same features as the standard controllers, but they can operate at temperatures as low as -13 degrees Fahrenheit or as high as 158 degrees Fahrenheit. The Armor ControlLogix controllers each include 2 Ethernet communication modules have have IP67-rated enclosures that support machine-mounting. The ControlLogix series also includes Armor GuardLogix controllers and standard GuardLogix controllers. Several ControlLogix controllers that are Ethernet-compatible can support communication speeds of 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps. Controllers in this series can also support DeviceNet, ControlNet, Remote I/O, and Data Highway Plus communication options. The ControlLogix controllers can be used to assemble different kinds of controller systems. Simple ControlLogix controller systems include a standalone ControlLogix controller and I/O modules on 1 chassis. ControlLogix controller systems can include multiple controllers on 1 chassis, and these multi-controller systems are useful in motion applications with several drives and motors. ControlLogix systems can also use networks to connect multiple controllers to 1 chassis. In addition to a controller, a complete ControlLogix system requires a chassis, I/O modules, 1 or more power supplies, and communication modules.

The Allen-Bradley ControlLogix System are state-of-the-art Programmable Automation Controllers (PAC) that are designed for medium to large and complex applications that covers standard, safety, extreme temperatures and On-machine applications. This PAC family is suitable for use with industrial applications such as Motion control, Discrete control, Process and High-availability processes. These controllers are high-performance controllers that ensures operational reliability and maintainability.
ControlLogix controllers belong to the 1756 Product catalog. Initially released as ControlLogix 5550 controllers, the ControlLogix Platform continuously evolved to ControlLogix 5560, 5570 and 5580, with Logix 5580 being the latest and modern controllers. Along the evolution of the controller platform, system enhances include significant user memory increase, improved redundancy, and Lithium battery independence.
Earlier version of the ControlLogix platform such as the Logix 5550 and 5560 are discontinued while the Logix 5570 are matured products and Logix 5580 are the active controller products. Logix 5560 up to Logix 5580 controllers are Ethernet enabled controllers, with embedded USB ports for downloading of the controller’s initial configuration.
ControlLogix controllers support a wide variety of standard Input and Output modules, specialty modules, communication interface modules and 3rd party encompass partner modules. This controller features an unparalleled openness, supporting a wide variety of communication protocols such as Remote I/O (RIO), Data Highway Plus (DH+), DeviceNet, ControlNet, Ethernet and Serial based communication protocols. Other protocols may be supported with the use of gateways and converter modules, manufactured by encompass partner companies.
ControlLogix Platforms is capable of implementing integrated safety as this platform supports the GuardLogix safety controllers. Either I/O modules of Standard ControlLogix may be installed to the GuardLogix chassis or a GuardLogix module may be installed with A ControlLogix chassis.
The ControlLogix system is a highly modular and customizable Programmable Automation Controller platform. A ControlLogix system is composed of a rack available in Four (4), Seven (7), Ten (10), Thirteen (13) and Seventeen (17) slots; Power supply available in DC and AC voltage categories, Controller, and I/O modules composed of Input and Output Discrete and analog modules. Optional modules such as communication modules and specialty modules may be installed to meet user specific or process specific requirements.
ControlLogix platform including modules are installed with a modifiable firmware. Firmware may be updated or downgraded, according to the specific functionality required by the process. Additionally, firmware upgrade corrects known anomalies of any modules. Firmware update is executed with the use of Firmware Flash tool called ControlFlash software.
ControlLoogix Controllers and modules are configured using RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000 controllers. Earlier versions such as Logix 5550 and Logix 5560 use the RSLogix 5000 while Logix 5570 and Logix 5580 use Studio 5000 Design environment. A more specific rule for selecting Programming software for a specific type of controller is with reference to the firmware revision. Firmware Revision 20.11 or lower uses RSLogix 5000 programming software while Firmware Revision Version 21.00 and later uses Studio 5000 Logix designer.
ControlLogix controllers support programming languages such as Ladder, Function Block Diagram, Sequential Function Chart, Statement List (ST) and Structured Text.
