The CompactLogix controllers are PLCs or programmable logic controllers manufactured by Allen-Bradley. Some CompactLogix controllers support Ethernet/IP communication options and some support DeviceNet communication options. These controllers also provide advanced control options and a variety of I/O devices to a system. The CompactLogix controllers are compatible with Allen-Bradley I/O modules from the Bulletin 1769 product line. Multiple CompactLogix controllers can be used on the same chassis or in the same network. All CompactLogix controllers have serial ports. They support I/O modules that can be used in DIN rail-mounted I/O systems and panel-mounted I/O systems. A complete CompactLogix system includes a CompactLogix controller, I/O modules, a communication network, power supplies, and software. When the system is assembled, the CompactLogix controller is the leftmost module, and it needs to be installed within 4 modules of the power supply. Some of the I/O modules in the system can be installed up to 8 miles away from the system power supply. Some CompactLogix controllers can support 16 I/O modules in a system and some CompactLogix controllers can support 30 I/O modules in a system. CompactLogix systems can include more than 1 I/O bank if large numbers of I/O modules are required, and each I/O bank requires a power supply. The communication bus in a CompactLogix system must be terminated with an end cap. Several CompactLogix controller modules can operate with up to 32 continuous controller tasks and up to 100 programs per task. A device can be connected to a CompactLogix controller through its serial port with a 1756-CP3 serial cable or 1747-CP3 serial cable.

About Allen-Bradley CompactLogix
The Allen-Bradley CompactLogix belongs to the Bulletin 1768 and 1769 Programmable Automation Controllers. These controllers are ideal for use in small to medium applications and features standard modules and compatibility with the Compact GuardLoigix control systems for embedded safety.

CompactLogix controllers may be installed with Compact GuardLogix modules for implementing embedded safety. This controller platform also supports motion control over Ethernet I/P. Updated controllers and modern models, belonging to the CompactLogix 5480 controllers are Internet of Things (IoT) ready, supporting Windows 10 IoT enterprise running in parallel to the Logix engine.

CompactLogix controllers are available in a very wide selection, from controllers categorized as Standard, Safety, on-Machine and Real-Time control + Windows application. Some controllers come with built-in I/O channels while some are fully modular CompactLogix assemblies. Such CompactLogix controllers include CompactLogix 5380, CompactLogix 5370 L3, CompactLogix 5370 L2, CompactLogix 5370 L1 and the modern CompactLogix 5480. These controllers are Ethernet I/P enabled, and support firmware upgrade via the ControlFlash Firmware Update Tool.

CompactLogix 5370 L1 features user memory range of up to 384KB to 1MB, with embedded communication ports such as Two (2) Ethernet and One USB client port. 5370 L2 controllers features an increased memory range of 750KB to 1MB with the same Two (2) Ethernet and One USB client port. CompactLogix 5370 comes with a memory range of 1MB to 5MB with Two (2) Ethernet and One USB client port. CompactLogix 5380 features 0.6MB to 10MB memory size range with Two (2) Gigabit Ethernet and One USB client port. The modern CompactLogix 5480 controller features Three (3) Gigabit Ethernet communication ports and One (1) USB client for Logix Control Engine use and One (1) Gigabit Ethernet, Two (2) USB 3.0 ports and One (1) Display Port for Microsoft Windows 10 use.

All controllers are capable of implementing controller tasks such as Continuous, Periodic and Event. A maximum of 32 controller task is supported by one controller with each task supporting 1000 programs. This controller platform also supports configuration of Event tasks that may be associated with a Consumed tag, EVENT instruction triggers, Module Input Data Change, and motion events

CompactLogix 5370 supports installation of expansion I/O banks such as left to Right or Right to Left expansion banks for simple and cost effective I/O expansion. For high-density expansion, some CompactLogix controllers support installation of POINT I/O modules and 1769 Compact I/O modules.

CompactLogix controllers may be configured using RSLogix 5000 Programming Software or Studio 5000 Logix Designer application software. Earlier versions or controllers with firmware revision 20.11 or lower are compatible with RSLogix 5000 while controllers with firmware revision 21.00 are designed to used Studio 5000.

CompactLogix controllers support installation of Secure Digital (SD) Cards that serves as the controller’s non-volatile memory. These SD cards may be used to burn user programs and user data, for configuration of automatic loading of programs from this expansion card.  Secure Digital card memory ranges from 1MB to 32GB memory card. These cards support removal and insertion under power however, requires restart when inserted to a live controller.
