About 1734-232ASC

The Allen-Bradley 1734-232ASC is a specialty module that belongs to the 1734 POINT I/O product family. This module enables device level communication with ASCII capable devices such as barcode readers. It supports RS232 communication standard, allowing connection to one device at a time. This module is ideally used in the manufacturing industry, most commonly found in the product sorting area where items shall be sorted according to product information, batch No. and other related product information in batching or manufacturing processes. This module supports American Standard Code For Information Interchange (ASCII) protocol and capable of sending 128 Bytes of ASCII data with transmission speeds of 9600 bps, 1200 bps, 2400 bps, 4800 bps, 19.2 kbps, and 38.4 kbps through the moduleÕs single RS232 communication port. This module has status indicators installed on its front panel. Status indicator provides information about TX FIFO overflow, RX FIFO overflow, RX parity error, handshake error, and new data flag. This module requires the use of shielded cable as ASCII data is sensitive to electrical noise. Do not terminate the shield on both ends as this may form a ground loop instead, terminate only one shield at an end. Additionally, do not connect the shield wire to the logicÕs common side as it may cause noise to the circuit. Connect the shield to the chassis ground. It can be established by connecting to the mounting DIN Rail, through the metal panel or mounting plate or at the I/O device. This ASCII module has a DeviceNet to serial link capability that enables support to a Flexible DeviceNet interface to a variety of ASCII devices. Data exchanged with the master can be set in polled, cyclic or change-of-state configuration. All these communication setting produces 4-132 Bytes of data and consumes 4-132 Bytes of data as well. The module must be defined in the hardware configuration to be recognized by the processor. Detailed configuration such as operational parameters and settings are configured using RSNetworkx for DeviceNet configuration tool. This module is also equipped with a Module and Network Status LED status indicator. A normally operating device shall have a Solid Green indication. Flashing Green requires further commissioning or configuration as an improper configuration or incomplete and incorrect parameters are defined. Solid Red indication indicates an unrecoverable fault which may mean device replacement, while a flashing Red indicates a recoverable fault. Module Self-Test is indicated by an alternate flashing of Red and Green lights. The network status Led shall illuminate a Solid Green LED which indicate Device is on-line, and connections are established. A Flashing Green LED implies that device is on-line without an allocated master. Solid Red indicates critical link-failure which means a failed communication device. Flashing Red indicates that One or more I/O connections is in timed-out state.
The Allen-Bradley 1734-232ASC is a POINT I/O ASCII Module. This module belongs to the POINT I/O family of distributed I/O modules which has an embedded One (1) serial channel supporting RS232, communication standard. It enables communication with peripheral products such as barcode reader and allows exchange of data up to 128 Bytes using through ASCII protocol.

F.A.Q for 1734-232ASC

Q: 1. What are compatible 1734 Terminal blocks for this module? A: Compatible terminal base units are 1734-TB, 1734-TBS, 1734-TOP, or 1734- TOPS.
Q: 2. How many ASCII channels does this module have?A: This module has only One (1) ASCII channel.
Q: 3. What is the recommended cable for the 1734-232ASC?A: Use a shielded cable for this module. It is important that one end of the shield wire is connected to the ground for protection to electrical noise.

PDFsupply Tech

The 1734-232ASC is a specialty communications module compatible with POINT I/O systems. This module enables the master controller to communicate with ASCII device such as barcode in RS232 Point-to-point configuration only. It can communicate one device at a time as this is the limit of RS232 interface. Compared to the 1734-485ASC which support multiple devices at a time, the 1734-232ASC is ideal for use in applications where only one ASCII device will connect to the moduleÕs channel.
